2009

  • CIO Top 100 Award from CIO Magazine DC WASA and Chief Information Officer Mujib Lodhi received the CIO Top 100 Award from CIO Magazine for creating business value using innovative technology. The technology for which DC WASA earned the honor this year was for a new infrastructure to support Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system business needs. The system will enable a much more proactive approach to business functions such as asset management and power usage planning. Top 100 organizations listed exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology. DC WASA joins such notable organizations as PricewaterhouseCoopers and United Parcel Service (UPS) on this prestigious list.
  • National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) 2009 National Environmental Achievement Awards
    • DC WASA received NACWA's Research and Technology Award for its collaboration with the Alexandria Sanitation Authority on a project entitled, "Enhancing Nitrogen Removal and Increasing Sustainability with Innovative Sidestream Treatment."
    • DC WASA was honored with NACWA's Public Information and Education Award for its public information and outreach efforts as part of the Virginia Biosolids Council. This award recognizes inventive efforts to educate the public on the effects of wastewater treatment and pollution control on the environment.
  • National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) 2009 Gold Peak Performance Award DC WASA received NACWA's Gold Peak Performance Award recognizing the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant's compliance record for 2008. The award honors wastewater treatment facilities that have achieved 100 percent compliance with their federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for an entire calendar year. The NPDES permit for Blue Plains regulates discharges by the plant into the Potomac River and has some of the most stringent requirements in the United States. The 2009 Gold Peak Performance Award is the ninth Gold award, in addition to three Silver awards, that DC Water has received in previous years.
  • ESRI Special Achievement in GIS Award DC WASA's Information Technology Department was awarded a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award for its innovative use of GIS technology for managing data on public fire hydrants (viewable in the "What We Do" section of this site.) DC WASA was selected from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide to receive this honor for its vision, leadership, and innovative use of ESRIs GIS technology. The Authority received the award at the 2009 ESRI International User Conference.
  • Distinguished Budget Presentation Award DC WASA received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award presented by the Government Finance Officers Association recognizing DC Water's 2008 Budget Book. This is the ninth straight year that DC WASA's Finance Department has won this prestigious award. The GFOA budget award "reflects the commitment of [DC WASA's] governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting."
  • Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Above and Beyond Award was presented to Mr. Stephen Lewis and DC WASA for continued commitment to protecting the rights of veterans, reservists and National Guard members.

2008

  • 2008 Platinum Award for Utility Excellence DC WASA received the 2008 Platinum Award for Utility Excellence from the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA). DC WASA was among only 11 utilities in the country to receive the award, recognizing sustained achievements in strategic planning, operations, finance, technology, human resources and communications.

  • NACWA Gold Peak Performance Award DC WASA received the Gold Peak Performance Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) recognizing the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant's permit compliance record for 2007.   • Grand Award in ACEC/MW Engineering Excellence Awards The Blue Plains Total Nitrogen Removal / Wet Weather Plan won the Grand Award in the Non-Design category for the 2008-2009 ACEC/MW Engineering Excellence Awards. This award at the local level qualifies DC WASA's contracting firm, Metcalf & Eddy / AECOM, to submit the project for the national competition.
  • 2008 MarCom Creative Gold Award DC WASA was awarded the 2008 MarCom Creative Gold Award from the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals for the DC WASA 2007 Annual Report (PDF 5.6 mb) .
  • 2008 Certificate of Achievement from the 100 Best Fleets in North America® Program DC WASA Fleet Management received the 2008 Certificate of Achievement from the 100 Best Fleets in North America® Program for consistently meeting its Standards of Excellence.

  • 2007 Metering Awards Program The Customer Service Department was presented with the 2007 Metering Awards Program peer award, by the VPN Global AMI Utility Peer Group for "Best Use of Metering as a Customer Care Tool" for the High Use Notification Alert (HUNA) technology that enables DC WASA to alert customers to spikes in their water use, which may be the first indication of a plumbing problem or leak. This award is a significant honor.
  • 2007 AVA Gold Award for Radio Production The Public Affairs Department was awarded the 2007 AVA Gold Award for the production of the Catch Basin Radio Public Service Announcement (PSA), a one-minute radio campaign highlighting the importance of discarding trash in the proper trash receptacle rather than the city's catch basins. The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) recognized DC WASA for outstanding creativity and production including concept, writing, direction, shooting, and editing. DC WASA is listed among the 2007 gold award winners on www.avaawards.com.
  • Biosolids Program Awarded Platinum Tier 4 Status The biosolids program successfully completed the interim audit for The National Biosolids Partnership Environmental Management System (NBP EMS). The third party auditors finalized their report and forwarded a copy commending DC WASA for its progress. In conjunction, the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP) awarded DC WASA Platinum Tier 4 status in the program, signifying the highest level of commitment and achievement.
  • 2007 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award Presented by The Government Finance Officers Association, this award recognized DC WASA's excellence in Budget presentation for the 2007 Budget Book (PDF 12.9 mb) .
  • 2007 Excellence in Financial Reporting Award The Government Finance Officers Association presented the Finance and budget Department with this award, recognizing the FY 2006 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (PDF 3.6 mb) .
  • WWOA Recognizes DC WASA for professional development support DC WASA was recognized at the 36th Joint Conference of the Chesapeake Water Environment Association and the Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia branch of the Water and Waste Operators Association (WWOA) with an award for continued support. DC WASA generously allocates time for staff to attend important training seminars presented by WWOA on environmental, health and safety topics.

2006

  • 2006 Platinum Award for Sustained Competitive Achievement DC WASA was presented with the Platinum Award for Sustained Competitive Achievement in 2006 and the Gold Award for Competitive Achievement in 2003, and won this new award for its sustained achievements in strategic planning, operations, finance, technology, human resources and communications. In addition to customer service and technology improvements, DC Water's peer reviewed research and career development programs help make it one of the top water utilities in the nation.
  • NACWA Gold Peak Performance Award The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) presented DC Water with the prestigious Gold Peak Performance in recognition of the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant's 100 percent compliance with their federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for an entire calendar year.
  • 2006 Certificate of Achievement from the 100 Best Fleets in North America® Program DC WASA Fleet Management received the 2006 Certificate of Achievement from the 100 Best Fleets in North America® Program for outstanding maintenance performance.
  • WWOA Recognizes DC WASA for professional development support The Chesapeake Water Environment Association and the Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia branch of the Water and Waste Operators Association presented DC WASA with an award for continued support of professional development. DC Water generously allocates time for staff to attend important training seminars presented by WWOA on environmental, health, and safety topics.
  • Exemplary Employer Award for Community Outreach The Covenant House cited DC WASA for its participation over the years with home, providing at-risk youth with job skills, employment and mentoring.
  • Public Affairs Department wins Communicator Awards DC WASA earned an Award of Excellence in Print for the 2004 Annual Report (PDF 29.9 mb) and an Award of Distinction for the 60-second radio public service announcement (PSA) entitled, "Keeping Catch Basins Clean".
