Title: Water Main Extensions

Policy: DCWASA will extend water mains to serve a house or building upon request by the owner or the authorized agent. When a water main is not available to serve a new house or building, DCWASA will extend the water main to the proposed point of connection for the water service line upon request by the owner or the authorized agent.

Background:

A water main extension is required for a single-family lot when the existing water main is more than 100 feet from the front of the lot. For all other types of building a water main, extension is required when the existing water mains are more than 250 feet from the front of the lot.

Procedure:

When an application for water main extension is received by the Documents and Permits Section (DPS) it is reviewed to assure that it contains all the necessary information, which consists of the Application for Extension Form, site plan and assessors plat if available. If the application is complete, the DPS forwards the application with a copy of the counter map and proposed extension annotated to the Chief, Water and Sewer Design Branch (WSDB). The applicant must meet with the supervisor of the Water and Sewer Design Branch to discuss schedule, design criteria and special circumstances for the project. A Capital Improvement Project is established and forwarded for approval. It takes up to two years for the approval, design and construction of a water main extension.
