Summary of Legal and Other Requirements[PDF 512 KB]
With the promulgation of the Part 503 regulation on February 19, 1993, the
US EPA met its obligation under the Clean Water Act (CWA) to establish
standards for the use and disposal of "sewage sludge" (i.e.,
biosolids). The regulations are based on a multi-year risk analysis in
which EPA scientists assessed the potential of pollutants in biosolids to
affect public health and the environment through various routes of
exposure.
