Internships At DC WASA

About the Internship Program

The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority sponsors an internship program for students interested in careers in the public sector. Participants will have an opportunity to view the many technical, professional and management jobs that are available in the water and wastewater treatment industry. Interns will be exposed to work assignments and projects that compliment their academic training and career aspirations. DC WASA offers both summer and year-round internship opportunities.

Summer Internship Positions

The summer internship positions last from early June to mid-August. Participants have an opportunity to gain experience in the following work areas:

Internship Program
  • Administrative Management
  • Financial Management/Public Affairs
  • Human Resources
  • Legal Research
  • Water Distribution Processes
  • Wastewater Distribution Processes
  • Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental, Process, and Computer Engineering

Summer interns also participate in professional development training and field trips to regulatory and environmental agencies.

Year-round Internship Positions

Year-round internship positions are designated for junior and senior year undergraduate students and graduate students majoring in engineering disciplines, computer technology, or environmental sciences. The objective of the year-round program is to provide interns with long-term exposure to complex assignments. Students get the opportunity to apply to the work environment, the theoretical and practical knowledge that has been learned in the classroom.

Eligibility

Summer Internships:
Undergraduates must be at least a second semester sophomore with an overall grade point average of 2.5 and must be in good standing at an accredited college or university.

Year-round Internships:
Junior or senior year undergraduate and graduate engineering or environmental sciences major and must have a 3.0 grade point average. Year-round interns must also maintain a 3.0 grade point average for the duration of the internship.

Selection Criteria

Students selected for the program will undergo a panel review and will also be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Application completion
  • Academic record
  • Two-page essay that identifies the expectations from the program and specific interest
  • Academic advisor's recommendation
  • References
  • Availability of a position that reflects the applicant's interest and major

Selected candidates will be notified of acceptance in the program by May 1.
