Description of Duties:The incumbent assesses job classification for proper protective equipment.  Audits contractor’s safety performance.  Reviews and approves safety issues related to building construction and renovation.  Provides safety oversight and direction to the Director regarding effective operation and compliance of WASA’s Fire Protection Program.  Trains and advises safety committee.  Manages Occupational Safety Health ACT (OSHA) compliance program. Monitors and evaluates the progress of the unit towards meeting goals and makes adjustments in objectives, work plans, schedules, and commitment of resources.  May be required to work after hours as WASA’s representative on the citywide emergency response team or as an Emergency Liaison Officer (ELO) for the Authority in the District of Columbia’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA).  0perates Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position.  Maintains vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner.  Reports any operational deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.  Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the Director, Safety & Security.
Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene or Safety Engineering from an accredited university or college and five (5) years of related progressive experience associated with workplace health and safety programs.  Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operating License and a DC WASA Vehicle Endorsement.  Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and health principles, techniques, practices, and standards.  Fundamental knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, statistics, mathematics, engineering mechanics, industrial processes, etc.  Skilled in communicating, orally and in writing.  Utilizes personal computer and maintains a working knowledge of applicable software programs (i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, etc).
Other Requirements:
  • In the event that an offer is extended, the candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.
  • Incumbent serves as an essential employee, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the Authority has closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.
  • Incumbent must posses a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's Permit
