The DC Water and Sewer Authority (DC WASA) is in the process of undertaking sewer system restorations and repairs in targeted Ward 2 neighborhoods near the Georgetown M Street business corridor.

Approximately $1 million is being invested in this project which will enhance sewer flows, minimize backups and restore sewer lines to their original structural ability. The project will also minimize surface disturbances by utilizing trenchless technology wherever possible.

The repairs will take place in sewers and manholes located within boundaries from 31st Street, N.W. to 29th Street, N.W. and from M Street, N.W. to Avon Lane, N.W. (see map on back side of Fact sheet on Georgetown sewer rehabilitation (PDF) ).

DC WASA Work Scope Will Include

  • Structurally rehabilitate 2,535 linear feet of 8-inch to 18-inch sewers utilizing trenchless technology, e.g. cured-in-place (CIP) relining of existing pipes.
  • Replace old sewers with new 12-inch combined sewer pipes by open trench excavation at four locations.
  • Rehabilitate 28 sewer manholes by epoxy lining.
  • Check the condition of 265 linear feet of sewers prior to proposed repairs using closed circuit television inspections.

Schedule

Work began in summer 2008 and will continue through spring 2009. Most work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. To complete CIP relining of sewer segments, the contractor may have to work continuously overnight and/or on Saturdays to minimize service disruptions.
